I LOVE this before and after small powder room makeover! This DIY wainscoting, vanity, and wallpaper added style and color on a low budget.
Before and After Small Powder Room Makeover
Hello, Hello! It’s finally time for me to share my latest room makeover. I am so excited about this small powder room makeover, guys!
This colorful DIY half bathroom design has the wow factor I’ve always wanted in this room. It was tough figuring out what to do in this small bathroom.
Those little half baths, or water closets, can be so boring. So, I knew I needed to add some texture and color to that room.
Using wainscoting, wood tones, lots of white or off white, and fun pops of color seems to be my jam these days.
You can see more examples of that in 3 of my other before and after room makeovers: DIY Home Living Room Makeover, or Family Room Makeover On A Budget, or this 2 Story Foyer Makeover with Molding.
I think using those same DIY ideas in this small bathroom makeover also worked in this room. What do you think?
Before and After Half Bathroom Makeover Photos
First, here’s a look at how this Powder Room looked when we moved in 6 years ago. I really struggled with the design in this room.
I mean a half bath is basically a closet with a toilet and a small sink in it. That can be a really boring room unless you figure out how to make it stylish.
I started off with 5 small DIY changes in the bathroom. You can see the details on those in this Powder Room Makeover Ideas post. BUT that Powder Room still needed an overall fresh, style update.
Our home already has a traditional design full of tons of custom wainscoting, trim, crown molding, and cabinets. So, I wanted to continue that style in the half bathroom.
The beautiful wallpaper from Anthropologie, DIY v-groove wainscoting, and the easy DIY Wood Shelf over the toilet added instant appeal to this room.
Here’s another before and after photo from this small bathroom makeover.
That DIY vanity I made when I cut a dresser in half, and vessel sink were a huge improvement over the old pedestal sink.
All of these changes work together to give this room an updated, colorful, but traditional style that I am so in love with right now.
Some Low Budget Half Bathroom Makeover Ideas
DIY Wainscoting in a Powder Room
If you’re a fan of home DIY projects, like me, adding some sort of wainscoting to a half bath can be a quick and easy way to add style.
I used a 4′ x 8′ v-groove panel as the wainscoting in this powder room. You can also get a similar look with 8′ long v-groove planks, sold at Home Depot and Lowes.
But, there are other types of wainscoting that would look good too. I added DIY picture frame wainscoting in my Master Bathroom water closet.
And, the lattice DIY board and batten I used in my boys bedroom makeover would look good in a small bathroom too.
Add Colorful Wallpaper in a Half Bath
Adding some colorful wallpaper in a small bathroom can be a great way to add style in a small, boring room. I used Anthropologie’s Synchronized Wallpaper in this room.
The Tempaper Store on Amazon has some amazing removable wallpaper options. I also love the beautiful peel and stick wallpaper from the Spoonflower Store on Amazon.
Upgrade the Half Bathroom Mirror
That mirror has been a real challenge for me in the last 6 years. I’ve painted it 4 times but I never really liked it until I did this Rust Patina paint makeover.
A faux paint look can be a great way to add depth and character to a plain mirror or home décor. Check out my Faux Metal Paint tutorial or this DIY Weathered Paint Effect with Chalk Paint for more beautiful options.
Add DIY Crown Molding
A small room, like a powder room, can be a great first time crown molding room. The smaller length of the walls can be easier to work with.
Check out this post for tips about where to use Caulk or Wood Filler on Wood Trim.
I also ended up painting the ceiling too. It just made the whole room feel polished and really finished.
Add a Shelf Over the Toilet
I added this simple and sweet DIY shelf to add a bit more color and character. Plus, it sort of breaks up all of that white wainscoting in a nice way.
My son painted those little bird houses for me when he was 2. I just had to find a way to display them. 🙂
Update the Vanity in a Half Bath
How welcoming and fun is this room now?! It just makes me happy every time I’m in there.
That vessel sink adds tons of character and saves storage space in that dresser I cut in half to make this vanity. You can find steps for how to cut and modify drawers for plumbing too.
Those pretty faux bone drawer pulls are from World Market. If you don’t have one of those nearby, Amazon has a bunch of great bone/white drawer pulls.
The faucets are Moen Brantford faucets. They have a nice traditional style that works with this colorful small half bath makeover.
That counter top is Silestone Lusso Quartz leftover from our big Kitchen Remodel. We used it in our Laundry Room Makeover too.
And, if your tile grout is dingy and ugly, here’s my DIY to Fix Ugly Grout. It’s a game changer, guys. 🙂
