Whether it’s light or dark, teal is such an amazing color on furniture! It turns any piece of furniture into an instant beauty.

Teal paint colors can look dark and moody or bright and cheery, depending on the look you want.

I love teal, guys! I have used it to paint cabinets and furniture in my house. It always looks beautiful in any room.

I use dark teals when I want a color that looks amazing that still blends in with other colors in a room. I go for more of a medium teal when I want that color to be the main color in a room.

In this post I have 5 of my favorite teal paint colors and the quick and easy DIY teal painted furniture makeover steps – no primer or top coat required.

Best Teal Paint Color for Furniture

There are so many amazing teal paint colors. And, they can all look so different. Teal can lean blue, green, or even grey. I tend to go for the colors that lean more green. But, they can all be fantastic on furniture.

Just pick the one that works best with the colors in your room. Here’s my 5 current favorites.

Magnolia Homes by Kilz color Weekend

Magnolia Homes by Kilz paint color Weekend is a deep, dark Teal is even prettier in person. I’ve only used it straight from the can.

But, I bet it would look beautiful with a dark wax over it too. It would look beautiful on cabinets in a bathroom or in an office too.

Here’s a look at this beautiful dark teal paint color on my DIY Console Table Plan with Drawers. If you’re into woodworking, I have printable build plans available on the tutorial for that console table.

Magnolia Homes by Kilz color Spontaneous

The Magnolia Homes by Kilz color Spontaneous is a beautiful bright and cheery medium teal paint color. I love it on the cabinets in our Laundry Room.

That teal paint color turned the room from boring and drab into a stylish colorful laundry room in one day.

It looks beautiful on the DIY Over Washer and Dryer Laundry Table I built too.

I’ve also used this teal paint color Spontaneous on this DIY Wooden Toy Box and in this Stripping Paint from Wood Furniture tutorial.

The Magnolia Homes by Kilz paint line can be bought online or at most Ace Hardware stores. I’ve been using this paint line in my home a lot for the last few years.

I love the beautiful paint colors in the Magnolia Homes by Kilz line. And, this paint always covers quickly and dries hard, like most chalk and acrylic paints.

Country Chic Chalk Style Paint color Jitterbug

Here’s another moody, dark teal paint color I love. This Country Chic Chalk Style Paint color Jitterbug is so amazing. I’d love it in any room.

That dark color gives it a more upscale, grown up look that would be beautiful in a moody library style office. The Country Chic line of chalk style paints is a recent find on Amazon I’m loving. It’s a quality, fast drying paint, at a very affordable price.

Country Chic Chalk Style Paint color Wanderess

The Country Chic paint color Wanderess is a bit lighter and brighter than Jitterbug. I think this color would be beautiful in a bedroom or even as a kitchen table or island color. 🙂

Country Chic Chalk Style Paint color Bliss

Go for an even lighter and more cheerful teal paint color with Country Chic’s paint color Bliss. This light teal paint color leans a bit more blue. I’d love this in a tween or teen bedroom. But anywhere this teal chalk paint color is used would be beautiful, right?!

OK, here’s what you’ll need to do your own easy DIY teal painted furniture makeover.

Here’s What You’ll Need

• TSP to clean the furniture
• Optional: Wood Filler or Bondo and Medium Grit Sanding Block
• Fine Grit Sanding Block
• Clean Shop Rag or Tack Cloth
• A Good Nylon Paint Brush
• Your Favorite Beautiful Teal Chalk or Chalk Style Paint Color

How to Paint Furniture Teal

Now, let’s get to those easy DIY teal painted furniture steps. These steps include tips for repainting any piece of furniture AND how to paint unfinished furniture.

Step One

You should prep previously painted or stained furniture by cleaning off any dirt and oils with a degreaser, like TSP. A 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water can remove grease too.

Step Two – Optional, won’t always need to be done.

You can repair any small dents and damage with a paintable wood filler. Repair furniture damage with bondo all purpose putty, if the damaged area is bigger than a quarter. Then sand the repair smooth with 120 grit sandpaper once the wood filler or putty is dry.

Step Three

Next, lightly sand the entire surface of the furniture with a 120 grit sanding block or sandpaper. If the furniture you are sanding looks great already and has a smooth, chip-free finish, just lightly scuff sand the old finish to make it easier for the paint to stick.

I recommend just hand sanding for this step. Power sanders can sometimes cause damage to furniture. You only really need a power sander on really uneven, chippy old painted surfaces.

You also want to sand new furniture builds or unfinished furniture with 120 grit too. Again, that light sanding texture helps to give the paint a good grip onto wood.

I always recommend wearing a mask when sanding. And, be careful sanding laminated furniture. Sanding laminated furniture too much can remove the laminate or veneer and you’ll be left with rough plywood or chipboard.

Step Four

Wipe down your furniture with a lightly damp rag or dry tack cloth to remove all dust. This is one of the most important steps to this easy DIY teal painted furniture makeover. It’s easy to do, but if you skip this step your paint will look terrible.

Step Five

Important Note: Most furniture won’t need a primer for chalk, chalk style, or acrylic paints. BUT, any furniture that has knotholes, is made of mahogany, has an oil-based finish, and laminate furniture will need a primer.

I like this Zinsser 123 Water-Based All Projects Primer. It’s supposed to work on all oil and water-based stains.

Also, use a primer if you buy a paint that suggests using a primer in the instructions. All paints have different instructions. It’s best to follow those if you buy a teal paint color from a brand I didn’t suggest above.

Before opening the paint, turn it upside down and shake it for 2 minutes. Then flip it right side up, take off the lid, and stir with a paint stick for 2 minutes.

Apply 2 coats of the teal chalk paint color you picked. Follow the directions on the paint container for the best results. You usually only need 2 coats of chalk paint, chalk style paint, or acrylic paint.

Be sure to carefully follow the directions for dry time so that the paint can cure (harden) correctly.

This paint shouldn’t need sanding between coats. But if the finish doesn’t look as smooth as you expected, you can lightly wet sand the last coat to get a butter smooth finish. You can read more about this in how to get a smooth finish with chalk paint.

After wet sanding, lightly wipe down the paint with a clean damp cloth to remove the residue.

Step Six – Optional Step, won’t always need to be done.

A top coat is optional on the teal chalk and acrylic paints I recommended above. But, if you know that the furniture you’re painting will get a lot of use and abuse, I recommend a top coat.

I love the professional looking subtle sheen and durability in General Finishes Flat Out Flat or Minwax Polycrylic in Matte. The sheen in these products looks just like the sheen on expensive furniture from furniture stores.

Again, follow the directions on the product you are using for the best result. That’s it for this easy DIY teal painted furniture makeover. Not too hard, right?!
