I attached the bottom to the sides, then flipped it over to glue and nail one edge on.
Directions to Make this DIY Utensil Caddy Basket
  1. Make your cuts using the measurements above.
  2. Sand the pieces with a fine grit, like 120. This’ll prepare the wood for stain, remove oils and dirt, and smooth out any rough spots.
  3. Use the 17″ long 1″ x 6″ piece as a base. The 17″ long 1″ x 4″ pieces sit on top of this piece. But it’s a bit easier to assemble this part upside down. So, set the sides on edge on a level surface. Apply glue to each side, then carefully attach the bottom. Make sure it’s square and even on each side.
  4. Then use your brad nailer OR wire nails and hammer to put 3 1 1/4″ nails along each side. If you have clamps, they’d help keep everything in place while you hammer. If not, you can use a drill to make small pilot holes before hammering. You just want to keep the pieces from shifting under the movement of the hammer.
  5. Now you can attach the front and back pieces using the same glue and nail method you used for the side. I would use 4 nails on each end, near the corners.
  6. Wipe away any excess glue with a slightly damp cloth.
  7. Patch any holes with wood filler. If you used a brad nailer, like me, they can occasionally go a bit crazy and pop out of unexpected places. No need to panic. Snip the exposed end of the nail off with wire cutters, use a nail set to hammer the tip into the wood, then patch with wood filler.
  8. Let the glue and wood filler dry per instructions on the products.
  9. Sand down patched areas and all edges with that 120 grit paper again.
  10. Wipe off dust once everything is sanded.
  11. Apply your favorite stain or paint. I used Sherwin Williams Hale Navy. It’s the perfect Patriotic Blue, right? Let dry before applying a second coat, if needed.
  12. After that dries, apply polyurethane.

Sanding the sharp edges off gives the box a more finished look.

Spare knobs make this caddy even easier to carry.
Decorate this DIY Utensil Caddy Basket

The stars I used came in 3 different sizes. I played around with a few layout ideas before picking one I liked. You can follow my example or pick another pattern you like. Then lightly sand their edges and give them 2 coats of white paint. Finish them with poly to keep them nice an white. Glue them in place with a dab of wood glue.

I added some spare knobs to the ends of my caddy. Handles would work too. This makes it easier to carry, but you don’t have to use them.

Now fill up the caddy with those backyard BBQ supplies and have fun!

How about another great use for this DIY box? Try this 5 Mason Jar Planter Box. It uses those fabulous LED mini lights to give the planter some extra charm. It looks beautiful on our dining room table, but would make fantastic wedding centerpieces. And the DIY box with jars and lights is still less than $15. Yea!
