DIY Reversible Sign Decor for all Seasons

DIY Reversible Sign Decor for all Seasons

This DIY reversible sign makes it easier to freshen your home decor. I don’t want to pack everything away as I change things around, but I do want to keep the decor fresh and seasonal. Having a reversible sign with a light and dark side is the key to this DIY.

This DIY Reversible Sign is easy to make, can be made with your design, and can match more of your seasonal and holiday decor.
Works with my Thanksgiving decor.

I picked a neutral style with the wreath and the arrows.  You could also be more specific to the seasons and holidays depending on how many signs you’d like to make. Have a Thanksgiving & Christmas reversible sign, maybe a Winter & Summer or just a neutral design on one side and patriotic on the other for the 4th of July lovers! This is totally customizable to your style. See how I found these free images, and text, and resized them for my project in a previous post.

Make this Reversible Sign

I found this absolutely beautiful and thick 15″ pine round in the lumber department at Lowes for less than $10. I’m sure Home Depot will have something similar too. Before staining, I always give wood a light sanding with a fine grit sandpaper and remove the dust with a clean, dry cloth. Then I applied Minwax’s Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner, waited 10 minutes, and applied Minwax’s Wood Stain in Jacobean. Always follow the directions on the products you are using. After applying the stain, use a dry cloth to wipe away all excess stain, so that it doesn’t leave a sticky residue on your piece. Once that dries, you can always add a second coat to get a deeper color.

First side stained and drying.

I stained both sides, letting them dry completely. Then applied three thin coats of a white latex to just one side. I also could have used an acrylic. It would have dried much quicker. Now your sign is prepped and ready for your designs. For the light side of the sign, I used a pencil to transfer my design to the sign (see image below). On the darker side, I used a piece of white chalk. This technique works with charcoal, graphite, and carbon paper too.

You might remember this technique from art class. Print your text, shade the back of the print with pencil or chalk, trace over the text, and ta-da, your text has transferred to the sign

Looks cute with Santa too.

Now grab you favorite paint markers or acrylic paints and brush. I used Elmer’s White Paint Marker, grey, sky blue, and gold for this sign. I chose a medium tip, but they also have a fine tip available for smaller, more precise work and a super tip for large scale projects. I’ve provided the free printable for this project below. Have fun!

  2. I have seen those wooden rounds at the store and never ever thought of doing this! What a great idea, so creative! I especially love the side that says family. Thanks for sharing at My Busy Beehives #beeparty this week!
