Easy DIY Towel or Coat Rack

Easy DIY Towel or Coat Rack

Want an excuse to use those cute knobs and hooks from World Market and Hobby Lobby?

This DIY project was definitely a quick win. I had recently replaced the wood counter tops I made for a laundry room makeover a couple years ago. They worked great, but we were putting quartz in the kitchen, so we decided to splurge for matching tops in the laundry. The counter top installers were able to get a large piece of the wood counter top out intact. The wood from the old makeover was just laying in my garage calling out to me. I decided to upgrade the small towel rack in the laundry room. Using the larger piece of wood would spread the pool towels and swimsuits out a bit to let them dry better. And a nice, big piece of finished wood looks like beautiful art.

I cut the wood to size and stained the freshly cut edges to match the top. I used Minwax’s Jacobean Stain, its my go to color. Then lightly sanded the top with a fine grit so I could add fresh poly to the whole piece. I added a couple of coats of Rust-Oleum Polyurethane. I love, love, love their matte finish poly. Matte just seems to make things look more high-end and hides little imperfections. I used the cute towel hooks from the old towel rack. These were all purchased at Hobby Lobby a few years ago. They always have the cutest hooks and cabinet pulls in stock.

I drilled 2 holes in the new towel rack to mount it to the wall. I hid those holes under 2 of the hooks. I used plastic anchors in the wall to hold the mounting screws securely in place. Boring, but necessary work. I love the finished project. It just dresses up the laundry room beautifully.
